The Mayfly Box Story on the Laminated Insert

A most essential piece of equipment at mayfly time, and as the box will be subjected to all sorts of weather in an open boat, it should be constructed of marine plywood or hardwood
The first step is to make a box with one open side on to which a sheet of perforated zinc (as used in meat safes) is tacked
The box lid is then made by cutting out, with a very fine saw, the section shown as 'A' in the diagram. A length of piano hinge is then screwed into place and the resulting hinged lid is held shut by two simple catches, on on each side
A hole, 13/4 inches in diameter, is then cut out - (marked 'B' in diagram) - this is the entry hole for each live mayfly and it is covered by a moveable lid swivelling on a single screw
To complete the box, a carrying handle is fitted, and I find it useful to twist a piece of wire to form a hook to fit over the gunwale of the boat, and the box is kept clear of the flor-boards and any water slopping around
Having collected an appropriate number of flies and placed them, one by one, into the box, it is an amazing sight to open the hinged lid and see dozens of flies clinging to the perforated zinc like rows of soldiers on parade. The reason being that having been put into a darkened box the settle on the area where daylight is showing through tiny holes
The lid can be safely opened, a fly extracted and the rid re-closed, without any of the flies moving
Do not, however, leave the lid open for longer than a few seconds at a time otherwise all will head for freedom!
